Attachment B - Sixth Meeting - 17 February 1997

MAJOR ISSUES RAISED BY MEMBERS DURING DISCUSSION OF THE LONG TERM OPERATING PLAN FOR SYDNEY AIRPORT AND ASSOCIATED AIRSPACE

A divergent range of opinions was expressed on whether the proposed distribution of aircraft movements was equitable. Points made in relation to the plan included:

  • that there will still be too many take-offs to the north
  • that there will be too many heavy jets arriving over Marrickville
  • a substantial proportion of movements will be shifted from the north to the Earlwood area which was previously outside the 20 ANEF zone
  • the plan is unfair to Kurnell residents
  • there will be a bias toward parallel operations over the longer term.

Issues on which a need for further analysis/clarification of the plan was seen as desirable included:

  • runway requirements of long haul jets
  • the trident
  • safety analysis
  • independent assessment of environmental impact
  • possible conflict with Second Sydney Airport (SSA) flight paths
  • a need to demonstrate the targets can be achieved
  • the continuing availability of some modes in the light of forecast traffic increases.

Other issues that were emphasised in discussion included:

  • the need for a legislated cap of 80 aircraft movements per hour at KSA and for the curfew to be maintained
  • an early decision on a Second Sydney Airport (SSA)
  • a need to educate the community in how the airport operates
  • implementation as soon as possible
  • the early establishment of an Implementation and Monitoring Committee.
